Oxytocin, a hormone that mammals produce naturally, might help prevent alcohol intoxication. This hypothesis is based on an experiment involving three groups of laboratory rats. The first group was given alcohol, the second was injected with oxytocin before being given the same amount of alcohol, and the third group was given no alcohol. As expected, the inebriated rats huddled in the corner of the cage, barely moving, while the rats that drank no alcohol wandered about the cage as before. What was surprising was that the rats injected with the hormone also behaved no differently than usual. In a further test, the intoxicated rats were able to hang upside down from a metal grid for only about 2 seconds. Meanwhile, both the control group and those injected with oxytocin could hold on for 10 to 15, indicating that oxytocin __________________.

During the middle part of the 20th century, China adopted a centralized, government-controlled economy based upon socialist ideology.

    (A) Due to its economic isolation, along with widespread corruption and faulty implementation, China¡¯s attempt at a socialist economy stagnated from the beginning, never translating into a viable model.

    (B) At the time, such a system was at odds with the widespread endorsement of industrialized capitalism taking place in the rest of the developed world. Consequently, China received considerable condemnation from Western powers, as well as trade embargoes and diplomatic sanctions.

    (C) Then, during the late 1970s, organizational changes in the Communist Party took place. With the rise to power of Deng Xiaoping, China began gradually implementing certain principles of capitalism to help revive the economy.
