Geoffrey Chaucer¡¯s The Canterbury Tales is a long poem written in the 14th century that follows the pilgrimage of a group of people who are making their way to Canterbury to pray. The journey by foot is long, and there is little else to do to pass the time, so each member of the group promises to tell two stories on the way there and two on the way back for entertainment. The group is highly diverse, which reveals a lot about life in the 14th century. For instance, religious figures are represented alongside a knight, a wife, and a variety of other colorful characters. Each tale they tell essentially shows that medieval life varied greatly depending on what one's role in society was.

¨ç Chaucer¡¯s work is a retrospective account of life in the medieval era.

¨è Each pilgrim pledges to amuse the group with a total of four stories.

¨é The Canterbury Tales offers limited insight into life in the 14th century.

¨ê Social position did not have a very significant effect on medieval people.

The famous children¡¯s novelist Laura Ingalls Wilder was born in 1867. ¨ç While Wilder attended school as a child¦¬a substantial achievement for a rural female at the time¦¬nothing in her education hinted she would become a writer. ¨è She married at the age of 18 and barely survived on income from a farm she owned with her husband. ¨é As such, scholars are unsure when she first embraced writing as a career. ¨ê All that is known about Wilder¡¯s emergence as a writer is that she published her first written work in 1911, beginning what would become a prolific career.
