What seemed like science fiction only years ago has now become reality. Technological advancements have given us the 3D printer, which allows users to create items of various designs. Automobile parts, candy molds, and customized braces are only a few of the thousands of items the printers can produce. However, new technology often spurs controversy. Opponents of 3D printers claim that these devices will destroy the economies of countries that rely on basic manufacturing. These are some of the poorest countries in the world, and displacing human labor with 3D printing machines would devastate their standards of living. On the other hand, proponents of 3D printing state that change is an inevitable result of progress, and they focus attention on the advantages. For instance, doctors could produce custom joint replacements and prosthetics in the remotest of areas. The potential of 3D printing is certainly impressive. _____________, more time is required to tell if it really benefits society or is the start of something far more dangerous.

In 1917, five years after Juliette Gordon Low founded the Girl Scouts, the Mistletoe Troop in Muskogee, Oklahoma needed a way to finance their activities. Looking for a way to raise funds that was also beneficial to the girls, the troop turned to baking. Within five years, the national Girl Scouts organization had latched on to the idea and encouraged local troops to do so as well. They even published a recipe for a low cost cookie that could be sold by the girls. Eventually, commercial bakers took over production, but the girls still sell the cookies door-to-door.
