A common complaint of students studying a math subject is, ¡°Why do we need to know this? We¡¯ll never use it in real life.¡± Well, the idea that mathematics is impractical is a misconception. Do you like playing billiards? Making a shot in that game is pure trigonometry and physics. How about watching sports? Well, you can¡¯t analyze a player or team¡¯s performance effectively without statistics and probability. Do you ever plan on buying a house or opening up a bank account? Try computing interest calculations without calculus. It simply isn¡¯t possible to perform many of these calculations without math. All of this makes mathematics one of the most valuable subjects a person can study!

Textbooks describe interstellar space as the dark, empty areas between the stars, but it is a bit more complicated than that. Stars such as our Sun continually emit streams of particles and magnetic radiation called solar wind into space. Eventually, there will come a point when the solar wind can no longer exert its influence, and this theoretical boundary is known as the heliopause. Interstellar space, which is composed of 99 percent gas and 1 percent dust, is the region that lies beyond the heliopause. Although no human has ever ventured that far from Earth, NASA¡¯s Voyageur 1 became the first spacecraft ever to enter this mysterious area, passing through our Sun¡¯s heliopause in 2012.

¨ç Interstellar space contains nothing but gas and dust.

¨è Interstellar space is the area that is unaffected by solar wind.

¨é Our Sun keeps sending out particles and magnetic radiation.

¨ê NASA scientists want to explore the area beyond the heliopause.
