The expression ¡°canary in a coal mine¡± is based on the historical practice of coal miners taking the little birds to work with them. Because birds are more sensitive to air pollution than humans, the death of a canary would alert miners to hazards that they cannot immediately detect and act as an indication that they should exit the mine. Similar environmental threats are all around us today. Many man-made chemicals interfere with the normal development and reproduction of animals, and several species of marine mammals, reptiles, and amphibians that are regularly exposed to these pollutants have experienced population declines. While there is so far little definitive evidence to suggest that humans might go down the same path, what scientists have observed happening to various wildlife species should not be ignored. Like the canaries, they might just be the harbingers of imminent peril.

Developed in Europe in the 1980s, natural swimming pools are environmentally friendly alternatives to conventional pools. Whereas harsh chemicals like chlorine are needed to keep the water in traditional pools clean, the water is pumped through biological filters in natural pools. These filters can be made of gravel and rocks, or composed of aquatic plants whose roots continually take up bacteria and contaminants. An advantage of natural pools is that they require very little maintenance once they are installed. _______________, they can be designed in a multitude of ways. Some are devised to resemble actual ponds, complete with lily pads and lotus flowers, while others are disguised as traditional-looking pools.
