Founded by James T. Sutherland in 1943, the Hockey Hall of Fame in Canada is devoted to preserving the history of ice hockey. Initially built in the city of Kingston before being moved to its present location in downtown Toronto, the Hockey Hall of Fame houses tributes to legendary players such as Gordie Howe and Wayne Gretzky, as well as notable on-ice officials and “builders.” The latter category includes coaches, team owners, managers, and others who have contributed substantially to the sport. New members must first be nominated by one of the 18 people on the selection committee. A maximum of four players, two builders, and one on-ice official are typically inducted each year.

Last summer, I took my first proper vacation in years. My job as a high-ranking corporate lawyer meant I led a fast-paced lifestyle and constantly worked under stressful conditions. When my health began to deteriorate, my doctor ordered me to go somewhere warm and do nothing for a week—and it worked. As soon as I stepped off that small plane onto the tarmac in Bali, I felt a sense of tranquility engulf me like a reassuring blanket. I inhaled deeply and enjoyed the warm feeling of the sun on my face. Time seemed to slow down the longer I stayed on the island. I spent my days lounging on the beach or by the pool with the books I had never gotten around to reading and my evenings gazing at the stars with a glass of wine. The city and all of my responsibilities there felt so far away.
